5 protestors killed

Over 300 injured

Industry Desk: The quota movement for thefifth day was continuing yesterday and has spread over the country. Al least five students have been killed in Chittagong, Dhaka and Rangpur and over 300 others wounded in clashes with Chattara League and police. Of them 3 killed in Chittagong, one in Dhaka and one in Rangpur.
3 killed in Chittagong
Three people, including a college student, were killed in a clash between Chhatra League and protestors demanding quota reform in Chittagong.
Director of Chittagong Medical CollegeHospital Brigadier General Mohammad Taslim Uddin confirmed the matter yesterday at around 5 pm.
He said that the bodies of two people are in the emergency department morgue of Chittagong Medical College Hospital. One of them is a young man named Akram (23) of Chittagong College. Two others are pedestrians. But we did not know their names.
He also said, besides, about 20 people are hospitalized with injuries.
One killed in Rangpur
A student of Begum Rokeya University (BRU) was killed in a police clash with quota reform activists in Rangpur.
The incident took place on Tuesday (July 16) at around 1:15 pm at Lagbag intersection in Rangpur.
The deceased Abu Saeed was a student of the English Department of BegumRokeya University.
It is known that students of Zilla School, Police Lines School and College, Lions School and College, Government College, Polytechnic Institute from Rangpur DC intersection were going towards Jahaj Company intersection with protest and were stopped by the police at Captain Bacology intersection. Meanwhile, the students got involved in a dispute with the police. At one point, they crossed the police barrier and moved forward. When the procession reached Lagbagh junction, the police attacked them.
Around half a hundred students were seriously injured when the police fired rubber bullets and tear cells. Abu Saeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University’s English department, was among the injured and was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Rangpur Medical College Hospital emergency department doctor Ashiqur Rahman said that in the afternoon, a student named Abu Saeed was brought to the emergency department with serious injuries. He died there before treatment could begin.
Deputy Police Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Abu Maruf Hossain said, we are on high alert. They were barred for security reasons.
One died in Dhaka Medical
A young man who was injured in the clash between BCL and protestors demanding quota reform at the capital’s Science Lab intersection has died in Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
He died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday (July 16) afternoon.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost inspector Bachchu Mia confirmed this information citing doctors.
He said, the approximate age of the deceased will be 25 years.
However, according to sources at the scene, the deceased youth is a hawker. He was attacked after falling in front of the quota reform activists at Science Lab intersection in the capital.
3 injured at Chankharpul intersection
Shots were fired at the protesting students demanding quota reform at Chankhanarpul intersection in the capital. In this, 3 people including two students of Dhaka University were shot.
On Tuesday (July 16) around 5 pm, protesters were fired upon at Chankharpul intersection.
The students complained and said that the leaders and activists of the Dhaka Metropolis South Chhatra League shot at ordinary students. All the four shot victims have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College.
Cricketers concern
The quota reform movement has spread heat among students and general public across the country. Apart from the capital Dhaka, protesting students are holding road blockades and protest programs in various educational institutions of the country. Bangladesh national team cricketers Nazmul Shanto, Tawhid Hriday and Shariful Islam opened up about this movement of students.
Shariful and Hridoy are currently in Sri Lanka to play in the Lankan Premier League (LPL). Even though they are outside the country, they responded to the current unstable situation of the country on social media.
Tiger pacer Shariful gave a brief status on his official Facebook. He wrote, ‘I am a cricketer but a student. I don’t want any more students to bleed.’
Dhaka University student Hriday also wrote on his verified Facebook, “I am away from everything, so I have not seen much. May the Dhaka University of my life not be bloody anymore.
Tiger captain Nazmul Shanto also posted a Facebook status saying, ‘I was silent, but I am not blind’, which is believed to be a reference to this movement.
Yesterday in the Dhaka University area between the quota agitating students and Chhatra League leaders and activists, there was a chase several times throughout the day. Many students were also injured in this untoward incident. There was a storm of condemnation after the pictures and videos of the attacked students were spread on the Internet.
The students are still continuing their agitation for quota reform in different places of Dhaka city including ScienceLab intersection, Gabtali-Mohammadpur Embankment, Natun Bazaar, MadhyaBadda to Bashundhara residential area, Kuril Bishwa road.
Pepper spray in the hands of female students
Women students of the anti-discrimination student movement took a stand on the road with pepper spray in their hands to defend themselves, demanding reform of quota in government jobs.
This scene was seen in the central Shaheed Minar area of Dhaka University on Tuesday (July 16) afternoon.
A female student of Dhaka University, who did not want to be named, said that pepper spray has been kept ready for self-defense.
He said, yesterday the attackers tortured our women. Also, they laid hands on us while going to the hospital with the injured students.
