60,000 math and science teacher shortage: Minister
Staff Correspondent: Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury has announced the initiative to appoint diploma engineers as mathematics and science teachers to meet the shortage of teachers in the implementation of the new curriculum.

On the occasion, the education minister said, ‘Diploma engineers should be used to solve the teacher crisis and the participation of diploma engineers should be increased in the education philosophy of the current curriculum, Activity Based Learning. Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury said, “According to our new curriculum, many mathematics and science teachers are needed in private educational institutions. We think there is a shortage of about 60,000 math and science teachers. It will be possible to solve the shortage of teachers if we can employ our diploma passed engineers there. That is under our consideration.
However, the press release did not give any details about how many teachers are in short supply at any stage.
Regarding giving equivalent status to diploma engineers, the education minister said, it takes 5 years for an SSC pass student to pass BSC (pass course). On the other hand, it takes 4 years to pass the diploma. In that case, if a student who has passed diploma works in a government or private institution for one year, he can be given B, Sc (pass) equivalent status. The decision will be taken after discussing with the participants.
