Average 2,000 cases every year for not using of jute bags

Staff Correspondent: About 1,222 mobile courts have been operated in the last financial year (2022-23) to implement the law on the mandatory use of jute wrapping in products. Through this, 2,077 cases have been filed. A fine of Tk 1.06 crore has been imposed.

It is known that according to the Compulsory Use of Jute Wraps in Products Act, 2010, the use of jute sacks for storage, supply and packaging of 19 types of products is mandatory. After this law, the first six products; That is, jute sacks are made mandatory for storage, supply and packaging of paddy, rice, wheat, maize, fertilizer and sugar. On January 21, 2017, chilli, turmeric, onion, ginger, garlic, dal, coriander, potato, flour, flour and bran were added to this list. On August 6, 2018, the use of jute bags for packaging of poultry and fish feed was made mandatory.
If jute wrapping is not used as per the law, the violator can be punished with imprisonment not exceeding one year or fine not exceeding 50 thousand rupees or both.
For this purpose, mobile courts are conducted every month with the help of district and upazila administrations across the country.
Meanwhile, the information says that in the previous fiscal year 2021-22, Tk 1.09 crore were imposed by operating 1,365 mobile courts.
On the other hand, under the Jute Act, 2017 and the Jute (Licensing and Enforcement) Rules, 1964, 15,411 licenses have been issued for jute and jute products business in the last financial year. Which was 15,227 in the previous year.
Meanwhile, the data says that in the previous financial year 2021-22, 1,365 mobile courts conducted 2,304 cases. Tk 1.09 crore was fined from this.
