Household expenditure increased 6-time during Modi ear in India

This is the first time that data on monthly household expenditure in rural and urban areas has been released under the Modi government. The two-decade calculations show that during this period there has been a major shift in the calculation of monthly household consumption between rural and urban areas. In terms of the financial year 2022-23, while the monthly household expenditure in the country’s cities is Rs 6,459, the monthly household consumption expenditure or MPCE in the villages is Rs 3,773.
The rural-urban expenditure gap has come down from 83.9% in 2011-12 to 71.2%, 88.2% in 2009-10 and 90.8% in 2004-05. A fact sheet on the website of the Ministry of Statistics shows that over 18 years, the average MPCE in rural areas has increased more than six times, even more than in urban areas.

In 2004-05, the expenditure was Rs 579 in rural areas and Rs 1,105 in urban areas, indicating an increase of 552% in rural areas and 484% in urban areas. The Household Expenditure Survey (HCES) was conducted between August 2022 and July 2023 Key economic indicators such as GDP, retail inflation and poverty levels are important in the assessment.
According to published data, Sikkim has the highest monthly household expenditure in the country (Rs 7,731 in rural areas and Rs12,105 in urban areas). The lowest is in Chhattisgarh (Rs 2,466 in villages and Rs 4,483 in towns).
Meanwhile, it has been seen that the cost of food is Rs 1,750 in the village and Rs 2,530 in the city. The cost of other areas is estimated at Rs 2,023 in rural areas and Rs 3,929 in urban areas. The Household Expenditure Survey is conducted every five years, but the 2017-18 data was not released due to data quality issues. The last survey was published in 2011-12.
