UN closely monitoring Dr Yunus issue
International Desk : The United Nations is closely monitoring the Nobel laureate professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus issue. This was announced in the regular press briefing of the Office of the Secretary General of the United Nations on Wednesday.
In the briefing, a journalist asked, how is the UN monitoring the situation of Nobel Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus?
In response, Stephen Dujarric said, ‘I want to say that our representatives in Bangladesh are closely monitoring the incident. Professor Yunus has been a close friend of the United Nations throughout his career. I think his work is playing a special role in the development we are doing today.
In another question, the same journalist said, it is known that more than 25,000 leaders and activists of the opposition party in Bangladesh have been arrested before the January 7 election. 13 people died in the custody of the law and order forces. A few were released under pressure from the international community. So, will you call for the release of other prisoners?
Spokesperson Dujarric said, “I think our position on this matter is the same as before.” We will call for the release of all those who may have been detained for peacefully expressing their views.
