Over 10,000 arrested across the country

22 more cases in Dhaka

Staff Correspondent: Arrests are continuing across the country on various charges including creating sabotage around the quota reform movement. Till yesterday over 10,000 people have been arrested by the members of law enforcement forces. Among them, 532 people were arrested yesterday.
Meanwhile, 22 more cases were reported in the capital yesterday. The number of cases in the capital stood at 229. The number of arrests in these cases has reached 2,764 people.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Department Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (ADC) KN Roy Niyati told that 2,764 people have been arrested in Dhaka till yesterday. Among them, 228 people were arrested in the last 24 hours.
Talking to law enforcement officers of various districts, it is known that the most arrests were made in Dhaka Division; More than four and a half thousand. Then Chittagong. The number of arrests in this department is about 1,400. More than 12 hundred people were arrested in Rajshahi division. People from different classes and professions are among those arrested. At least 253 students have been arrested in 18 districts including Dhaka till yesterday.
Meanwhile, the party has alleged that at least 380 leaders and activists of BNP and allied organizations have been arrested in the police operation in Chittagong city in connection with the violence surrounding the quota reform movement. Chittagong Metropolitan BNP’s former Deputy Secretary Md. Idris Ali complained that the police are harassing the leaders and activists of different levels of their party from their houses every day. Leaders and activists of different levels are being arrested and accused in different cases. In the last 12 days, at least 380 activists of BNP and allied organizations have been arrested. Chittagong City Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz said yesterday that 40 people have been arrested in the last 24 hours in Chittagong city. In 12 days, 516 people were arrested in the city.
The government job quota reform movement remained peaceful till July 14. On July 15, after the clashes surrounding the students’ movement in Dhaka University, the protests spread almost all over the country. On this day, there were allegations of attacks on protestors at various places including Dhaka University, against the leaders and activists of the ruling party and organizations including the police. More than three hundred were injured in the attack. The next day (July 16) six people died in Dhaka, Chittagong and Rangpur. The highest loss of life around the movement occurred on July 19. 58 people died on this day.
