Six killed in Cox’s Bazar landslides amid heavy rain
Staff Correspondent: Six people of two families were killed in separate landslides triggered by relentless rain in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila and at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila early Friday.
A woman and her two daughters died due to a landslide in the Jhilongja area of Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila early Friday.
This incident happened around 2 am in the South Dikakul area of Jhilongja Union in the upazila.
Additional District Magistrate Atul Goni Osman confirmed the matter.
The deceased were identified as Akhi Moni, wife of Mizanur Rahman from South Dikakul, and their two daughters, Miha Jannat Naima and Latifa Islam.
According to Akhi Moni’s mother-in-law, they heard a loud sound of a landslide from Mizan’s house around 2am during heavy rain. Later, they went and found that Mizan’s family was buried under the debris. Mizan was immediately rescued alive. Subsequently, with the help of the Fire Service, the bodies of his wife and two young daughters were recovered.
Local residents said that Mizan’s house is at the foot of a hill. Heavy rain starting from Thursday afternoon had softened the soil. Later, during midnight, the hill collapsed and fell on his house.
Additional District Magistrate urged everyone living on the hills during heavy rainfall to stay in safe shelters.
In another incident, three members of the same family died after a landslide at the Ukhiya Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar on Friday.
The incident happened in Ukhiya’s Hakimpur camp-14 around 4am on Friday.
Shamsud Doza Nayan, Additional Commissioner of the Cox’s Bazar Relief and Rehabilitation Commission Office, confirmed the matter.
The deceased were Abdul Rahim, son of Kabir Ahmed from E-2 Block of Rohingya Camp 14, Abdul Hafiz, and Abdul Wahed.
Ataul Gani Osmani, Additional District Magistrate of Cox’s Bazar, said a total of six people have died due to landslides in the district. Among them, three are Bangladeshis and three are Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.
