Chennai Test: India dominate with massive lead as Bangladesh falter
Sports Desk: The hosts India secured a 227-run lead in their first innings after Bangladesh tumbled for meager 149 runs, with Jasprit Bumrah taking four wickets.
In the first innings, riding on the sixth Test century of Ravichandran Ashwin, India posted 376 runs.
For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud bagged five wickets, the first such feat for a Bangladeshi bowler against India.
Bangladesh started their reply disastrously, losing opener Shadman Islam in the first over of the innings. Four of Bangladesh’s top five batters failed to reach a double-digit total. The only batter at the top who reached a double-digit total was Najmul Hossain Shanto, who fell, scoring 20.
Mominul Haque suffered a golden duck to Akash Depp, who bagged Zakir Hasan and Mominul off two consecutive deliveries.
Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz attempted to stabilize the innings but couldn’t convert their starts into substantial scores. Shakib scored 32, and Litton and Mehidy fell for 22 and 27, respectively.
For India, Bumrah took four wickets, while Mohammad Siraj Akash, and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each.
With a commanding lead of over 200 runs, India chose to not enforce follow-on and instead decided to bat again to cement their strong position in the match.
