18 imported cows seized from Dhaka airport
Staff Correspondent: The cows — of Brahman breed — were imported from USA and arrived at Dhaka airport via a Turkish Airlines flight on Monday, Deputy Commissioner (Preventive) of Dhaka Customs House, Mohammad Abdus Sadeq, told media.
After the flight landed, no one came to the airport to claim the animals. Age of the cows range between 13 to 60 months.
An official of the Livestock Department came and confirmed the breed of the cows.
Abdus Sadeq said, customs officials seized the herd as import of Brahman-breed cows is not legal in the country, and the importer could not be located. The animals were handed over to the Livestock Department, he added.
The herd will be kept temporarily at the Central Cow Breeding and Dairy Farm in Savar under the custody of the Livestock Department, sources said.
Abdus Sadeq said that they will wait for around three weeks and if no one claims them, they will take the next course of action.
According to sources, price of all the cows in the bill of entry had been set at USD 40,000. However, customs officials estimate that the value of each cow is over Tk 12-15 lakh.
