Onion production
Staff Correspondent: Bangladesh ranks third in the world in onion production, which was earlier tenth.
This information was given by the scientists at a program organized on the occasion of production of Bari Onion-5 at the research field of Regional Spice Research Center of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) yesterday. The event was inaugurated in the morning by the Director General of Bari Debashish Sarkar.
It is known that the demand of onion in the country is 35-36 lakh metric tons every year. It produced 32 lakh metric tons last year. In the last one year, onion production in the country has increased by about eight lakh metric tons. Scientists say that if new varieties are cultivated in the right way, self-sufficiency in onion production will be achieved soon.
Gazipur’s chief scientific officer at the Bari Regional Spice Research Center, Dr. Haridas Chandra Mohant was the special guest at the presidency of the director (services and supplies) said. Md. Kamrul Hasan, director (research) said. Md. Tariqul Islam. Chief Scientific Officer and Project Director of Barry’s Spice Research Center Dr. Shailendra Nath Majumder, Scientific Officer Nivedita Nath and others.
