Sundarbans have 114 tigers

Staff Correspondent: The latest survey states that there are currently 114 tigers in the Sundarbans, said Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin.
“106 tigers were found in the Sundarbans in 2015 by counting using camera trapping method. As per the latest 2018 survey, there are 114 tigers in this forest. Besides, there are 1-1.5 lakh deers, 165 to 200 crocodiles and 40,000-50,000 monkeys in the Sundarbans,” he said.
He shared the information during the question-answer (Q&A) session from the ruling party MP Didarul Alam in the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday.
The Q&A session was presided over by Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury. Replying to a query from ruling party MP Benazir Ahmed, the Forest Minister said at present the amount of forest is 14.10 percent of the total land area and the tree cover is 22.37 percent of the total area.

Replying to a query from ruling party MP AQM Sarwar Jahan, the minister said under social forestry, 1,02,339.28 hectares of woods and block gardens have been created from FY 1980-81 to FY 2020-21. Besides, 76,752.366 km of strip gardens have been created. In this way, 7,26,654 beneficiaries have been added.
