Shelling continues residents of border leaving their homes

Bandarban Correspondent: A mortar shell fired from Myanmar on Friday (September 16) fell on the border of Konarpara area of Ghumdhum union of Naikxyongchari upazila in Bandarban. It exploded, killing one person and injuring six others. Since this incident, panic has increased among the residents of the border area. In this, the sound of gunfire is heard again since this morning. No one leaves the house unless necessary. Many are leaving their homes and moving elsewhere.
Anwar Hossain, a member of Ward No. 5 of Ghumdhum Union, said that the locals are spending the day in extreme fear after the casualties in the mortar shell and landmine explosion yesterday. They are not able to go to the jumkshet near the border for fear. Meanwhile, the sound of gunfire is heard several times across the border since this morning. In this situation, many people are moving to their relatives’ houses.
A local resident named Shafiul Alam said, “The situation at the border is still stagnant.” We are worried. Many have fled their homes.
Sohag Rana, inspector (in-charge) of Ghumdhum police outpost said, currently no one is being allowed to enter the border area. BGB is active there. There are no reports of anyone leaving the area in panic. This will be looked into. Police are also working to secure the area.
At around 8 pm on Friday, mortar shells fired from Myanmar landed in the no-man’s land of the border. The incident took place in Konarpara area of Ward No. 2 of Ghumdhum Union of Naikshyongchari. He lives in the border area due to the explosion. A Rohingya named Iqbal (17) was killed. At this time, five more people were injured.
Earlier on Friday afternoon, a young man named Winu Thwaing Tanchangya (22) was injured in a landmine explosion inside Myanmar across the Naikshyongchari border. His left ankle was severed in the blast. Due to this situation, it was decided to move the SSC examination center of Ghumdhum to Ukhiyar Kutupalong in Cox’s Bazar.
Deputy Commissioner of Bandarban Yachmin Parveen Tibriji said, “The border situation is not good. Internal unrest in Myanmar has fueled tension along the sleepy Tambru border. The administration is monitoring the matter with utmost importance so that the residents of the border area do not panic.
He also said, ‘In the current situation, the SSC exam candidates of Ghumdhum High School were taken today at a center in Ukhia Upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said, “Bangladesh does not want a war with Myanmar, but wants to resolve it peacefully.” But if it does not work, the United Nations will be informed.
He also said, “Despite repeated warnings from Bangladesh at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they did not keep their word.” Conflicts in their countries should be contained within their borders. In constant communication with the Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP).
