Ashfaque Choudhury: The ceramic industry in Bangladesh is one of the most important contributors to the country’s exports earning sectors.
Bangladesh is the home to several ceramic factories producing ceramic products such as tiles, sanitary wares, floor tiles, tableware, pottery, and many more.
The ceramic industry in Bangladesh has been steadily growing over the years. The industry has seen a great deal of investment from local and foreign investors, which has allowed the industry to expand and become more competitive internationally.
According to a market analysis conducted by USADA at the end of 2019, Bangladesh’s ceramics market was worth Tk 7,550 crore, of which the tiles sector contributed the most with Tk 5,500 crore. The tableware and sanitary ware markets have respective sizes of Tk800 crore and Tk1,200 crore.
These days, ceramic goods such as dinnerware, pottery, tiles, sanitary ware, insulators, and other items are posinghuge demand in domestic and global markets.
More than 5 lakh individuals work in the industry, either directly or indirectly. The government has invested more than Tk 13,500 crore in this sector, generating Tk 400 crore in export earnings annually.
The local ceramics industry has replaced imports. News sources claim that Bangladesh currently has 70 sectors (including those for dinnerware, tiles, and sanitary products).
The country currently exports to nations such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Russian Federation, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Libya, Turkey, Jordan, Iran, Qatar, Oman, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, Maldives, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Myanmar, According to a recent estimation, the value of the worldwide market for ceramic goods will reach US$ 407.72 billion by 2025.
Industry insiders claim that industry in Bangladesh is one of the most important contributors to the country’s export earnings. However, Bangladesh’s ceramic industry relies heavily on importing raw materials such as clay, feldspar, and other minerals. Most of these materials are imported from China, India, and other countries in the region which creates a dent in the industry.
The insiders also claim that the sector is also a significant source of employment for unskilled and semi-skilled workers.
The ceramic industry in Bangladesh is an essential contributor to the country’s export earnings. The industry has seen a great deal of investment from local and foreign investors.
