3 feet of tidal bore likely

Staff Correspondent: The low pressure that is formed in the Bay has turned into a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. It moved from the sea to the land in Khepupara, Bangladesh, through Khulna and is now located as a depression in West Bengal, India. With this, air pressure variation prevails over the Bay of Bengal. As a result, maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been advised to keep hoisted the local cautionary signal no. 3 yesterday (August 2) as well. At the same time, there is a risk of a “tidal bore” of a maximum of 3 feet in the coastal districts.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the country’s Met Office, informed this in the latest marine weather situation yesterday afternoon.
According to the Met Office, the monsoon deep depression over Khulna and adjoining areas of Bangladesh moved towards West-Northwest and weakened into a “land depression”, and is currently lying over West Bengal-Bihar and adjoining areas. It is likely to move in a West-Northwesterly direction further and weaken gradually.
It is also informed that under its influence, a steep pressure gradient persists over North Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh. As a result, squally weather is likely to continue over North Bay and adjacent coastal areas of Bangladesh.
“Therefore, maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no. 3,” the Met Office’s special weather bulletin said.
It added that the under of influence a full moon and steep pressure gradient, the low-lying areas of the coastal districts and their offshore islands and chars are “likely to be inundated by the wind-driven surge height of 2-3 feet above the normal astronomical tide”.
“All fishing boats and trawlers operating in North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter until further notice,” the special weather bulletin informed.
BMD deputy director Meteorologist Kh. Hafizur Rahman said that light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions and at many places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions with “moderately heavy to very heavy falls” at places over the country in the next 24 hours ending today, Thursday (August 3).
During this period, day temperature may fall by (2-3)°C and night temperature may fall slightly over the country.
Apart from this, a mild heat wave is sweeping Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions and the districts of Dhaka, Tangail, Faridpur, Kishoregonj, Manikganj, Chuadanga and Kushtia and it may abate, the Met Office also said.
