Brig. Gen Sakhawat proposed to be CEC
Dr Jafrullah Chowdhury also proposes names of other ECs
Staff Correspondent: Former Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain has been proposed to be the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) by the trustee of the Public Health Center and Chairman of the Bhasani Followers Council Dr Jafrullah Chowdhury. As well as the citizen for good governance (Sujan) Secretary. He has nominated Badiul Alam Majumder, human rights leader Advocate Sultana Kamal, former army chief Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan and retired Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana as election
commissioners. On the occasion of the historic Kagmari Conference Day, Dr. Jafrullah offers this.
The term of the current Election Commission headed by KM Nurul Huda is coming to an end on February 14. Earlier, the government formed a search committee to form a new election commission. The committee will recommend names of qualified persons along with the President for the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners as per law. They will also ask the political parties for names for that purpose.
Jafrullah said that if real elections are to be held today, democracy is to be restored, people’s right to vote is to be restored, then a strong election commission is needed. There is no such provision in the present law. In such a situation, many political parties have not proposed anyone’s name to the search committee. However, you can consider a few names, Sakhawat Hossain was the former election commissioner.
If he is made the Chief Election Commissioner, he knows the way and will be able to do things strictly. He is accompanied by former army officer Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, he is not Aziz, he has a reputation as a gentleman. If Badiul Alam Majumder and Justice Nazmun Ara, Sultana Kamal and other truly gentle and courageous people are brought in the commission, the commission will be free from any controversy.
“Those who have been named in the search committee have not given an account of their assets. How can people have confidence in them in this situation,” Jafrullah added.
Suggesting that Bangladesh be divided into 16 provinces to establish good governance, he said that whatever the national government, all-party government or non-party government, they should be given at least two years. Then the flaws in the constitution will change. But the bottom line is that the country cannot really move with concentration. Bangladesh of 160 million people, it should be divided into at least 16 provinces. Then hundreds of flowers will bloom.
Many of you will be the Chief Minister, will be the Minister. A minister or a chief minister of a province will say, we will focus on education, someone will say we will work to improve the living standards of farmers and workers.
Commenting that a fair election is not possible with the current government in power. Jafrullah said, the oppressors never relinquish power, they have to relinquish power. Today BNP is not able to hold any meeting in their office. Taking them from there. Therefore, they (the BNP) should call for a larger movement the day after it is taken away. Because those who are oppressors, they never want to give up power. The power of the oppressors has to be relinquished. They fell through movement and struggle.
Convener of Citizens Unity and former VP of Daksh Mahmudur Rahman Manna, General Secretary of Revolutionary Workers Party Saiful Haque, Coordinator of Gana Sanghati Andolan Jonaid Saki, Former VP of Daksh Nurul Haque Nur, Secretary General of Bhasani Anusari Parishad Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu and others were present at the discussion.
