Challenges of govt

Enayet Karim: On August 5, the country and the international world witnessed a rare coup that is unprecedented in the history of the country. Hasina government’s dictatorship of the past decade and a half ended with the student uprising. The coup led to a temporary deterioration of the law and order situation in the country, which virtually collapsed. On the other hand, the long-term misrule has created a deadlock at all levels of the state. The primary responsibility for the implementation of the desire of the people that has been expressed through the uprising of the students and the transition from this stalemate is now the Nobel laureate led by Dr. Yunus. It goes without saying that the challenge is naturally steep.
According to a related report published on Saturday, even if the interim government period is not final, there is a lot of work ahead. Their big challenge is to overcome the prevailing instability in the political-economic-social field and create a roadmap to fulfill the dreams of the people. To achieve that, the state and society have to take multi-faceted steps to de-pollution. All-round reforms should be taken to rebuild the state structure that has collapsed under the authoritarian regime. One of their priorities is to initiate the process of prosecution of those involved in mass killings to sustain power, unrestrained corruption, irregularities, money laundering and power. The responsibility of reorganizing public administration and law enforcement, reforming dilapidated infrastructure and dynamizing the economy is also on their shoulders. There is an urge to return the country to the democratic process as soon as possible.
It is a matter of deep misfortune for us, that the nation defeated the external enemy, the distant Pakistani rulers, for 23 years of exploitation, rule, suppression, oppression and various discriminations and to get rid of the yoke of that exploitation. How much blood, how much sacrifice! Even after half a century of independence, this nation continued to walk the same path of exploitation and oppression. It means that since independence till today when those who have taken the responsibility of running the country, they have resorted to various irregularities and corruption. Almost everyone becomes more or less a dictator-whether democratic or undemocratic. In this long march, a welfare state for the people could not be developed even today. Analysts believe that in the last 15 years of this long journey, all the records of past irregularities, corruption and repression by the government have been broken. In other words, in the independent country, we have made our country a field of exploitation. But how much more that immobility! It must be broken – this rule. On August 5, the students and the masses of the country fulfilled the aspirations of the people of the country. They are showing the nation a new dream of building a new Bangladesh. On the way to realizing that dream, a great reform of the state is now needed.
We think that the law and order situation of the country needs to be returned to normal at this moment. Because in the absence of law and order forces, especially the police, various crimes are already being committed across the country. The safety of people’s life and property is threatened. Like this army, revolutionary reforms are necessary at all levels of administration. There is a huge challenge in revitalizing the economy. Therefore, the reforms should be properly reflected in the overall state system. Besides, their major responsibility is to create an environment of free, fair and universally acceptable elections in the country. We want the interim government to overcome all the challenges to build a new Bangladesh.
