Children’s tribunal judge cancels 7-day remand of Dhaka College student Faiyaz

Staff Correspondent: A children’s court in Dhaka on Sunday cancelled the remand of Hasnatul Islam Faiyaz, a student of Dhaka College, who was placed on a seven-day remand in a case filed at Jatrabari police station, accusing him of killing a cop during the quota protests on July 19.

Judge Roksana Begum Happy of Juvenile Court-3 of Dhaka, passed the order following an application submitted by Faiyaz’s lawyer challenging the legality of the lower court order, said Md. Asaduzzaman, sub-inspector (SI) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s crime and information department.

Following the cancellation of his remand, Faiyaz was transferred to a Child Development Centre.

Earlier, when Faiyaz was produced before the CMM court in Dhaka on July 27, the court granted a 7-day remand in view of the remand application of the investigating officer.

Faiyaz’s lawyer Md Mujahidul Islam opposed the remand and asked for bail, claiming Faiyaz was a ‘child’, since he wasn’t yet 18 years old.

The CMM court judge however granted the remand as Faiyaz’s laywer failed to produce any proof of age document.
