Govt cancels 10 coal-based projects
Staff Correspondent: The government has canceled contracts for 10 coal-fired power projects worth $12 billion.
This information was given by Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, Forests and Climate Change at a dialogue held at Hotel BRAC Inn in the capital yesterday.
He said the government had canceled the agreement to protect the environment from the effects of climate change. Because the government wants to green of all kinds of industrial sector including textile and garment sector. He requested the Ministry of Environment to submit a written letter to the entrepreneurs of the textile and garment sector, the largest sector, on what kind of policy support they want. Through this, the demand will be informed by the ministry in the next budget.
Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a private research organization, organized the dialogue on the transformation of green industry in the textile and garment sector. BGMEA President Faruk Hasan, BKMEA Executive President Mohammad Hatem, Head of Mission of Swedish Embassy in Dhaka Christine Johansson, and CPD executive director Fahmida Hossain were present.
