Hasina, Joy, Tulip ‘embezzled $5b’

Rooppur Nucler Power Plant

Industry Desk: Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family are accused of embezzling billions from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, according to recent allegations.
The report claims that Hasina laundered money into offshore accounts via a company established by her niece, Tulip Siddiq’s family. The Rooppur project, which costs $12.65 billion, is funded 90 percent by Russia. The agreement includes constructing a 2,400MW plant, operating it, supplying fuel, and managing the used uranium, with the plant’s operational life extending up to 80 years.
According to a report by Global Defence Corp, the nuclear reactors for the project are outdated Soviet-era models. The report alleges that Russia assisted Hasina in diverting $5 billion through Malaysian banks.
Tulip Siddiq, the current UK City Minister, is said to have played a crucial role in negotiating the nuclear deal and allegedly mediated a billion-dollar arms transaction between Bangladesh and Russia.
Since 2009, she is claimed to have received regular payments from Hasina.
The Mail Online reported that Tulip concealed her Kremlin meetings and connections with Putin and Hasina, including a critical meeting held six months before the election.
In 2009, Tulip, along with her mother Sheikh Rehana and uncle Tariq Ahmed Siddique, established ‘Prachhaya Limited’ and another firm, Jumana Investments, in the U.S. The Global Defence Corp’s report indicates that these companies were used to launder money into offshore accounts, with links to Destiny Group, and smuggled approximately $900 million to countries including the UK.
The report also suggests that Tulip, her mother, and other family members received a 30 percent kickback from Russia in exchange for facilitating the power plant deal.
