Inspector arrested in connection with incident near Ashulia station on Aug 5

Staff Correspondent: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-3 have arrested Inspector Arafat Hossain in connection with the incident of setting fire to the bodies of protesters killed in front of the Ashulia Police Station on August 5.

He was arrested from Dhaka’s Aftabnagar on Friday, confirmed ASP Imran Khan of RAB Headquarters (media wing).

The macabre incident came to light on August 29, when a 1-minute and 14-second video went viral on social media, showing two policemen grabbing the arms and legs of a dead body and throwing it onto a van already stacked with bodies.

Subsequently it was geolocated by factchecker for AFP’s Bangladesh bureau, Qadaruddin Shishir, and pinpointed to a spot near Ashulia police station, raising a tremendous hue and cry on social media, where some of the officers involved were also identified as attached to Ashulia police station.

A four-member investigation committee comprising Additional SP and DB officials was constituted to investigate the incident captured in the video.
