Per capita income decreased by $43
Staff Correspondent : Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) publishes the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as well as per capita income every year. However, the calculation of per capita income for the fiscal year 2022-23 is being hidden. By reducing the total population, the per capita income in terms of taka. And due to the increase in the exchange rate, the per capita income of the last financial year was not disclosed in terms dollars. However, the BBS had provisionally disclosed per capita income in dollars last May.
Meanwhile, Daily Industry calculated the per capita income in dollars based on the average exchange rate published by Bangladesh Bank. It has been seen that at the end of the fiscal year 2022-23, the per capita income has decreased to $2750, which was $2,793 at the end of the fiscal year 2021-22. That is, the per capita income decreased by $43 last financial year. This is the first time that per capita income has declined in recent times.
However, GDP and per capita income calculations are not acceptable in international circles. In that case disclosure of accounts in dollars is mandatory. However, BBS has tactfully avoided reducing per capita income in terms of dollars. However, the organization showed the per capita income of $2,765 for the fiscal year 2022-23 published last May. At that time, the dollar exchange rate was Tk 97.81. However, according to Bangladesh Bank, at the end of the last financial year, the dollar exchange rate stood at Tk99.42.

According to the data of Bangladesh Bank, the average exchange rate of the dollar increased to Tk 99.42 in the fiscal year 2022-23. However, the dollar exchange rate has fluctuated throughout the year. However, BBS calculates GDP and GNI by taking into consideration the average dollar exchange rate published by Bangladesh Bank every year.
It can be seen that the size of GDP decreased to $4 lakh 51 thousand 704 and GNI $4 lakh 69 thousand 732 in last financial year. As a result, at the end of the fiscal year 2022-23, GDP per capita decreased to $2,644 and per capita income to $2,750.
Every year, the GDP and national income calculations are published in dollars in addition to taka, but this time why the dollar calculation was omitted, Director General of BBS Mohammad Mizanur Rahman told, “The exchange rate of the dollar has fluctuated a lot this time. For that reason, we have decided to publish the account only in the amount of money this time.
Bangladesh Bank has an official average exchange rate. In response to the question as to why the GDP and national income calculations were not published in dollars, the Director General said, “It is the decision of the authorities.” However, he did not want to comment on the fact.
