Bank sector lost Tk 92,261 cr in15-yr: CPD
Staff Correspondent: In the 15 years from 2008 to 2023, Tk 92,261 crore have been lost from the banking sector through various financial irregularities.
This information was given in a media briefing titled ‘Economy of Bangladesh 2023-24: Ongoing Crisis and Actions’ at CPD office in Dhanmondi on Saturday (December 23) morning.
Fahmida Khatun, executive director of CPD, said that there have been various types of financial irregularities including loans with fake documents, loans with the name of non-existent institutions, money loss.
He said that the scams or irregularities that happen in banks at different times are not available in official sources. They come from the media. Media workers may bring them from official sources. Compiled them for viewing. From 2008-23, 24 incidents were reported in the media. In these incidents, Tk 92,261 crore have been embezzled or wasted. You can calculate what can happen with this huge amount of money. You can calculate our revenue deficit. How much is being spent on social security, how much is being spent on education and health. What could we do with this amount of money?
He said, this money is being embezzled and wasted. The money in the bank is people’s money. How it is being spent is a matter of concern. In that context, the implementation and reform of regulations in the banking sector has become absolutely necessary.
