People of different classes and professions are protesting and have come down on the road. They want justice for the killing of the students. Enger in their eyes. Protests took place everywhere yesterday even on a holiday. As part of the central program of the anti-discrimination student movement, the students came down to protest in Abtabnagar and Uttara in the morning to hold a mass rally. There were also parents.
After Friday prayers, the flow of protest increased several times. They descended on the important places of the capital. The angry protestors took a stand at Sciencelab Mor, Shahbagh, Paltan, ECB Chatwar, Mirpur-10. There was a massive clash with the agitators in Uttara. Some were shot. The procession goes from the National Press Club to the Central Shaheed Minar.
This procession of students turned into a sea of people. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation was the main demand. Apart from this, mass marches have been held across the country. At that time, 2 people were killed in Habiganj and Khulna in clashes with the police and protesters. At least 15 people were injured in the attack by the Chhatra League-Youth League on student protests in Lakshmipur.
Clashes took place in several places including Sylhet, Habiganj, Narsingdi, Feni. In this way, the ‘prayer and mass march of students’ program was celebrated yesterday at the call of the anti-discrimination student movement across the country.
Rain-wet student protest march: Yesterday at 11:30 am, students held a mass march and protest in front of East West University in Aftabnagar of the capital. The students’ mass procession started from in front of East West University and went around Rampura Bridge to BRAC University. From there again through Rampura Bridge and ended in front of East West University around 12 noon. Several members of the police were also present in front and behind the mass procession.
The protestors chanted slogans like ‘Amar bhai kabare, khuni ken bayre’, ‘Abu Saeed died, why should the administration answer’, ‘We want justice’ etc. After that, a short rally was held with more than a hundred students of East West University. Students of Rajuk Uttara Model School and College held a protest march and rally in Sector 6, Uttara. Many dressed in school uniforms protested and marched in the rain. Many were school students here. Parents were also with them.
People’s sea at Shaheed Minar: A ‘DrohaJatra’ called by the teachers was held to demand an end to mass arrests, trial of July murders, release of detained students, withdrawal of curfew, opening of educational institutions and resignation of the government for killing a large number of students. Thousands of people participated in this journey despite the drizzling rain. The journey started at 3 pm from the National Press Club. Before this, they staged street plays and performed songs. Students, teachers, parents, cultural workers, intellectuals, representatives of civil society and leaders of various student organizations gave speeches at times. Then the procession goes to Shaheed Minar via Doel Chattar, TSC. Shaheed Minar area vibrated with slogans. It has been seen from the ground that the agitators started gathering in front of the National Press Club from 2 o’clock. The agitators started gathering one by one. The Press Club, Dhaka University and Shaheed Minar area began to vibrate with the sound of this procession of a large number of agitators.
Students, teachers, parents, representatives of civil society and leaders and activists of various student organizations took a stand at Shaheed Minar with national and red flags and various anti-government slogans and banners. The original banner read, ‘This vast crematorium is not my country, this bloody slaughterhouse is not my country. At this time, ‘Blood is staining the mail, let the tyranny die’, ‘One point, one demand, one resignation of the government’, ‘I will not let the blood of martyrs go in vain’, ‘Why did my brother die, Sheikh Hasina answer’, ‘Why is the murderer outside my brother’s grave’? , ‘Give back your quota, give back my brother’, ‘I have given you more blood, I want to fight, I want to fight, I want to live, ‘Bangladesh will respond with sticks, bullets, teargas,’ ‘Where there are bullets, there is a fight’, in various slogans. They made the Shaheed Minar vibrate. There they also performed street plays.
Anu Muhammad, retired Professor of Economics, Jahangirnagar University gave a speech at the beginning of the journey. He said, now there is only one demand – this government should resign. Power of the people should be brought to the people. There is nothing to ask from the government. But many trials are pending. “July murder” must be tried. And now the main agenda is how to make democratic transition in Bangladesh.
Public hygienist Mushtaq Hossain, Dhaka University teacher CR Abrar, Asif Nazrul, teacher Rehnuma Ahmed, Samina Lutfa, development economics researcher Maha Mirza, writer Syed Manjurul Islam, former president of CPB Mujahidul Islam Salim and others took part in the march.
Student union president Ragib Naeem announced the next program on behalf of the students. He said that the curfew should be withdrawn by Sunday, all the arrested should be released, all the educational institutions should be opened, the present government should resign for killing the students. If these demands are not met by today, then a mass march started from the National Press Club at 3 pm.
Uttal Science Lab-Shahbagh: A protest program was held at Sciencelab and Shahbagh in the capital on the call of the anti-discrimination student movement on the platform of the quota reform program. The agitators took a stand from Sciencelab intersection to Shahbagh intersection to demand 9 points. After staying there for a while, they again went to the Sciencelab intersection and announced the end of their program. At that time, the whole area became agitated with various slogans against the administration and the government.
It can be seen from the surface, since yesterday morning, there was a heavy police presence in the area of Dhanmondi-2, Sciencelab, City College, Dhaka College. They were accompanied by leaders and activists of various organizations of Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League. In the midst of this, the students of various institutions including Dhaka College, Eden Mahila College, Dhanmondi Ideal College, Dhaka City College, Bir Shrestha Munsi Abdur Rauf College, Bir Shrestha Noor Mohammad Public College started gathering at the Sciencelab intersection from 1 pm yesterday to make the pre-exploited program successful. Within some time, hundreds of people including students and parents gathered in the area one by one. At that time, they started shouting slogans at the head of Elephant Road (under foot over bridge). When the gathering of students increased, the police at one stage took a position on the footpath in front of Baitul Mamur Jame Masjid on Elephant Road. And the activists of Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League moved to Gauchia area of Newmarket. At half past two in the afternoon they all got together and started the mass procession in the pouring rain. The procession proceeded a little further and again halted at the Sciencelab junction. They chanted different slogans like my brother is in the grave, why are the police outside, fake fake, fake police. After three o’clock, a group of agitators announced the end of their program. But still the angry students did not agree to leave the road. They left Sciencelab intersection at 4:12 pm and started towards Shahbagh. The police also advanced behind them. At this time, the protestors started chanting slogans at Shahbag intersection. Traffic through Shahbagh area was stopped for some time. After staying at Shahbagh for about a quarter of an hour, they came back to Sciencelab intersection. Once again, they started shouting slogans against the government and the administration. After five pm from there they announced the end of their program and returned to their destination.
Qaumi Madrasachatra Oikya and General Muslims protest: Bangladesh Qaumi Madrasachatra Oikya and General Muslims protested against the killings and barbaric attacks in the quota reform movement and demanding justice for the victims. The protestors occupied the steps of the north gate of Baitul Mukarram on Saturday. Hundreds of students and worshipers took out a procession after staying there for a while. The procession passed through Purana Paltan Mor, Jatiya Press Club, Matsya Bhavan, Shahbagh and again ended in front of the Press Club.
It was seen from the ground that when the students and worshipers wanted to go towards TSC through Shahbagh, the police barricaded them in front of the Shahbagh museum. There they waited for 5 to 7 minutes and chanted anti-government slogans. Later took a procession from there and stayed at Shahbag intersection. After waiting there for about 10 minutes, he went in front of the National Press Club with a procession. In the meantime, they tore the banner with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s photo in front of the High Court and the museum.
Students protest at ECB Chattar and Mirpur: Students protested at ECB Chattar and Mirpur-10 of the capital to support the program of anti-discrimination student movement. Around 5 pm hundreds of protestors gathered in these two areas and protested. The protesters started gathering from 3 pm. Although there were protests here, traffic on the road was normal. Apart from this, a large number of law enforcement officers were present.
Bangladesh Udichi artist group protested against the death of students and wanted the government to fall. In this cultural gathering in front of the National Press Club after 11 am yesterday, Professor Badiur Rahman, President of Bangladesh Udichi Artist Group, said, “We have lost our children, we have lost our friends.” There was a quota movement of students but now it has become a movement of the people of Bengal. The government cannot escape responsibility for what happened.
Vice President Jamshed Anwar said that the government has given various titles to those who were with the rational quota movement. But billions of rupees are being looted, killed and disappeared under the government, there is no justice for them. We want the fall of this dictatorial government immediately. We strongly condemn and protest the indiscriminate killing of unarmed students everywhere. At this time Udichi Art Group Dhaka Metropolitan President Iqbal Ahmed, General Secretary Asif Noor and many others were present.
Medical teachers-students wanted justice for bullets: Yesterday, in the protest rally organized by doctors and medical teachers-students to protest against the killing of students and public in the ‘quota reform movement and the clashes caused by it, we want justice for every bullet, we want justice for every murder.’
Chest specialist Dr. Abdur Shakur Khan said that in the quota reform movement, the students taught the elderly to fight against injustice. In the history of the whole world, when the movement goes, the conspiracy also goes. There is a lot of debt day by day. By paying this debt, in the future there will be a beautiful independent Bangladesh, where there will be no oppression. In the future we will see that the people of this country will be able to speak like ordinary citizens of independent countries. He said that students and people were shot and killed by the bullets bought with tax money. The whole society is wounded. The entire nation is passing the day with heavy hearts today. My heart is bleeding. Students of government and private medical colleges joined the rally. Then they took out a procession.
Anti-Oppression Artist Society Demands Government’s Resignation: At around 11 am yesterday, the ‘Genocide and Anti-Oppression Artist Society’ movement demanded the release of the actual number of victims, investigation of the killings under the supervision of the United Nations, trial and the government’s resignation. Ordinary citizens including scenographers, photographers, performance artists, musicians, poets, writers, researchers, architects, art organizers participated despite the rain. Artists painted red protest paintings on long canvases depicting scenes of carnage. They perform a painfully emotional performance art called ‘Aastha-Anastha’. The main theme of the event was ‘Trust in the people, mistrust in autocracy’ and slogans like ‘liberate democracy, let autocracy die’ were given.
At that time, Sharmin Murshid, the leader of the private organization Brati and Utrasuri said, these young students have taught us to be brave. Motivated to speak out for equal rights. People from all walks of life should join the path so that their self-sacrifice does not go in vain. This movement should continue until democracy is established in the country. Author Rehenuma Ahmed said the exact number of murders has not been revealed yet. 212 deaths were reported in various ways. But the actual number of murders is much higher.
Apart from this, poet Sakhawat Tipu, artist Sumna Soma, artist Mostafa Zaman etc. also spoke. Among the participants were photographer Imtiaz Alam Baig, artist Shehzad Chowdhury, Amirul Rajeev, painter Kazi Tahsin Agaz Apoorva, Nuzhat Tabassum Anon, Asit Roy, musicians Bithi Ghosh, Krishnakali, photographer Mehbooba Mahjabeen Hasan, archivist Reesham Shahab, poet Shaon Chishti and others.
Shilpi Samaj made three demands. These are- immediate release of arrested students after stopping mass arrests and mass cases, release of law and order forces and government party thugs to restore the learning environment in all educational institutions and immediate resignation of the government taking responsibility for the killings in the quota reform movement. After that they marched through Satmasjid Road and went to Dhanmondi Road No. 27 and ended the program. After the meeting, a protest rally program was announced at Rabindra Sarovar in Dhanmondi on Saturday at 3 pm organized by musicians.
