Decreasing water swelling sufferings

Mahfuz Emran: About 10 lakh 47 thousand 29 families are trapped in water in 11 districts of the country due to torrents coming down from Tripura in upstream India and several days of heavy rain. However, there is no danger of flooding in any new area, said Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Kamrul Hasan. In a press conference at the Secretariat on, he said that the flood situation in Feni, Comilla, Chittagong, Khagrachari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Laxmipur and Cox’s Bazar is improving. No new areas are being flooded and there is no threat of it.
The secretary said that in the last 24 hours, no significant rainfall was observed in the eastern areas of Comilla, Brahmanbaria and Feni districts bordering Indian Tripura and in the interior basins of Tripura state and the water level of the upstream rivers continued to decrease. At present, the existing flood situation in the lower areas of Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Feni, Comilla and Chittagong districts continues to improve. At this time, the water level of Manu, Khoai and Dhalai rivers in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts of northeastern region may decrease to the level and the flood situation in the adjacent low-lying areas may continue to improve.
The relief secretary said that many diseases started to break out after the water receded. We have warned about this, requested everyone to use safe water. Our control room is open. Apart from this, there is an account opened by the Chief Advisor in case anyone wants to pay something, it continues. He said that a field hospital has been built in Feni. There are many private hospitals and clinics or healthcare institutions. They have been directed to ensure healthcare to all those who come from the flood affected areas for healthcare.
Disaster Management Secretary said that 73 upazilas of 11 districts have been affected by floods, 545 unions and municipalities have been affected. Stating that 10 lakh 47 thousand 29 families have been trapped by water so far, he said that the number of affected people is 52 lakh 9 thousand 798. Stating that the death toll is 24 as before, he said, “We have come to know that two people are missing in Moulvibazar.”

Secretary said that 3,654 shelters have been opened for flood victims, 4 lakh 15 thousand 273 people have taken shelter in these centers. Along with that 22,298 cattle have been sheltered. He said that a total of 748 medical teams are working to treat the flood victims.
The Disaster Management Secretary said that there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain in the eastern part of the country and the adjacent uplands in the next 24 hours. At this time, the water level of Gomti river in Comilla district of the region may remain stable and the flood situation in the adjacent low-lying areas may remain stable. There is a possibility of heavy rain in the south-eastern region of the country and adjacent uplands in the next 24 hours. At this time, the water level of Bandarban, Khagrachari, Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong district’s Sangu, Matamuhuri, Karnaphuli, Halda and other major rivers may rise.
He also said that according to the information of meteorological agencies, the flood situation in the lower areas of Feni district may improve in the next 24 hours, but may remain stable in some places. Brahmaputra-Jamuna river water level is receding. On the other hand, the Ganga-Padma river water level is stable, which may continue for the next 48 hours. The water level of Surma-Kushiara river in northeastern part of the country is stable, which may continue for the next 24 hours. The waters of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region are generally stable in the plains. Normal flow of these rivers may prevail in the next 48 hours.

Comilla representative said, two children of the same family drowned in flood water in Titas Upazila of Comilla. They are cousins. The casualty occurred at Baghairampur village of Ziarkandi union of the upazila at 10 am on Sunday. The deceased are – Samia Akhtar (10), elder daughter of mason Muktar Hossain of Baghairampur village and Ayesha Akhtar (9), daughter of Maldivian expatriate Monir Hossain. They are third class students of Khadijatul Kobra (R.) Mahila Madrasah, Nayakandi Bazar.
Local UP member said. Abdul Haque said, it is not right to keep Madrasas open in flood-affected areas. As the road is knee deep with water and strong current, if the madrasa authorities and parents were aware this accident would not have happened.
Teknaf (Cox’s Bazar) said that the anti-discrimination student movement has collected funds at the initiative of Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar to stand by the people of flood-affected areas. Tk 3 lakh 94 thousand 582 was collected in one day on Sunday.
Anti-discrimination student movement students from various universities in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Comilla and Cox’s Bazar and students from various educational institutions in Teknaf have collected money to stand by the people of flood-affected areas. From 10 am to 5 pm on Monday, students collected money in different parts of Teknaf city ignoring the rain and storm.
The students said that in addition to standing by the people of the flood-affected areas, Tk 3 lakh 94 thousand 582 was collected from Teknaf in one day with the participation of people from all walks of life of Teknaf Upazila of Cox’s Bazar in order to give to the relief fund of the chief advisor of the interim government. On Sunday, the money collected through Sonali Bank was sent to the chief adviser’s relief fund.
The representative of Noakhali said that the water level decreased a little because it did not rain all day on Monday. But due to heavy rain since midnight, the amount of water in Noakhali has increased. The residents of the district are once again trapped in water. They are in dire straits.
Out of 9 upazilas of the district, eight upazilas have been more affected by floods. Among these four upazilas, the residents of these upazilas are suffering due to the increase in water again. After the water receded a bit, the residents were preparing to return home from the shelters when the rains again raised the water level, causing them to worry again.
Due to excess water, relief or food trucks cannot go to village shelters. As a result, people living in various shelters in remote areas are living a kind of inhumane life.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital Syed Mohiuddin Abdul Azim said that 63 people have been bitten by snakes in Noakhali in the last three days. Out of this, 28 people have been bitten by snakes in the last 24 hours. 108 people are hospitalized due to diarrhea.
Deputy Commissioner Dewan Mahbubur Rahman said that due to rain at night, the water is rising and the people of the district are facing a new crisis. This will increase the problem of flood victims. So far, about 2 lakh people have taken shelter in 908 shelters. Whatever is available from the ministry is being given to the residents. So far 1 thousand 800 tons of rice, 45 lakhs in cash has been given. Army, various social, political, cultural and humanitarian organizations are working.
Mirsrai (Chittagong) representative said that in Mirsrai of Chittagong, more than 2 lakh people have been trapped in water for five consecutive days. Since last Wednesday, about 165 villages of 11 unions have been flooded since the water level of Feni river has continuously increased due to continuous rains and hill slopes. However, since yesterday morning, the water has reduced by one to two feet in some areas.
On the one hand, millions of helpless people are trapped in the flood. On the other hand, two gates of Muhuri, the largest irrigation project in the country, located downstream of the Feni river, were broken by water. Two more gates are useless. Because of this, on the one hand, during the tide, the water of the Bay of Bengal enters the interior through the Feni river. Also, during low tide water drainage is disrupted due to two gates being useless.
Feni Water Development Board executive engineer Mohammad Rashed Shahriar called several times to talk about this, but he did not receive the call.
Meanwhile, all types of traffic on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, which is considered the lifeline of the country’s economy, was closed due to floods for the past few days. Traffic on the Dhaka-bound lane started to return to normal from Sunday morning. However, due to being stuck on the road for the past few days, many of the cargo vehicles have lost essential raw consumables.
Sohel Sarkar, in-charge (inspector) of Zorarganj Highway Police Station in Mirsarai said that the Dhaka-bound lane has been fully opened since Sunday morning. The Chittagong-bound lane has also started to become normal.
Mirsarai Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Prashant Chakraborty said about the latest flood situation, no casualties were reported from Saturday night to Sunday. Water has started receding in some areas. Army, Police, Fire Service, Youth Red Crescent Alumni, various social organizations and students are individually rescuing the displaced people and distributing clean drinks, medicine and food among them.
Chittagong Palli Vidyut Samiti-3 Deputy General Manager of Baryarhat Zonal Office Hedayet Ullah and Deputy General Manager of Mirsrai Zonal Office Adnan Ahmed said that electricity supply has been started due to reduced intensity of water in some areas. Electricity service is still not available in most of the flood-affected areas.
