Hilsa production increased by 34,326 tons in a year

Staff Correspondent: Chandpur District Fisheries Officer Goram Mehedi Hasan said that canals, bels, ponds, rivers, floodplains, fish farms cultivated in cages have enriched Chandpur district. There are different species of fish including hilsa. In the last fiscal year 2022-2023, the fish demand of the district was 68,466 metric tons. The production was 1 lakh 16 thousand 90.62 tons and the surplus was 47,624.62 metric tons. In the same fiscal year, only hilsa production was 34,326 tons.

He said these things in the president’s speech at the discussion meeting on the activities taken by the Department of Fisheries to protect and achieve prosperity of fisheries resources on the occasion of National Fisheries Week at the Chandpur District Fisheries Officer’s office on Tuesday (July 30).
He said that Bangladesh is the first among 11 countries in the world in hilsa production and 86% of hilsa fish is produced in Bangladesh. Padma-Meghna Hilsa of Chandpur has everyone’s attention. Recently there have been allegations of fraud in the sale of hilsa online. Among them, many are taking this opportunity by opening pages on Facebook. We all have to be careful to protect the reputation of the district.
The district fisheries officer said, not only hilsa but all kinds of fish are produced in our river. Farmers also produce many types of fish. However, the people of this district show more interest in eating river fish. And the production of fish in the river is being hindered due to various reasons. Fisheries Research Institute is working along with Fisheries Department in these matters.
He said that the number of registered fishermen (fishermen) in the district is 47,249 people. In the financial year 2023-2024, through the Hilsa resource development and marketing project, weanling calves and legal nets are being distributed among the fishermen for the purpose of alternative employment. In the financial year 2023-2024, 500 fishermen were given calves, 276 fishermen were grouped with 92 legal thread nets and 350 beneficiary fishermen were trained for three days in Meghna river coastal Matlab North, Matlab South, Sadar and Haimchar upazilas.
