India Now opens 109 Farakka gates

Asifiqbal Thakoor, Delhi: India has opened 109 gates of Farakka Barrage due to floods in Bihar and Jharkhand. The gates were opened on Monday. Over 11 lakh cusecs of water will enter Bangladesh in one day. Due to the opening of the dam, there is a risk of flooding in Murshidabad of West Bengal and Bangladesh.
India has claimed that Bangladesh is being given information about the flood situation and landslides in advance.
On Monday, the barrage authorities said that there is water pressure due to floods in two neighboring states. But it is a matter of relief that no hills have descended from Nepal yet. In Farakka barrage area, the gate has to be opened as the water is flowing 77.34 meters above the water level. In that case, the amount of water in the feeder canal has also been increased.
General Manager of Farakka Barrage R. Desh Pande said, Farakka Barrage authorities are always on alert. Every moment is being monitored. The way the water pressure built up in a very short period of time did not open all the 109 gates, causing great pressure on the barrage. Big damage could have been done. For now, 40,000 cusecs of water has been released in the feeder canal and 11 lakh cusecs in the downstream.
Meanwhile, 11 districts of the country have been affected by floods since August 20. They are Feni, Comilla, Chittagong, Khagrachari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Laxmipur and Cox’s Bazar. 77 upazilas of these districts have been affected. A total of 9 lakh 79 thousand 901 families have become watertight. The number of affected people is 50 lakh 93 thousand 530.
