Tk 2,921 cr fetched from fish export in Khulna

Khulna Bureau: The Government has earned Tk 2,921 crore throgh exporting 88.81 metric tonnes of frozen shrimp and white fish from Khulna district in 2021-2022 fiscal year.
Khulna district has produced more 31,849 metric tonnes of fish against its demand,
Joydev Pal, District Fisheries Officer (DFO), Khulna said this while delivering the welcome speech at the inaugural ceremony of the week long National Fisheries Week-2022 at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner yesterday.
Fish production has increased significantly in the district after taking multidimensional development and extention programme for this sector, he said.
Country’s fisheries sector are supplying 60 percent protein and 11 percent people are involved in the profession, he said adding that the fisheries sector is also supplying 62.58 gram fish to each people against their demand of 60 gram.
Khulna City Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleqe addressed the function as chief guest while Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Khulna Md Moniruzzaman Talukder chaired it.
Terming shrimp farming and its export is an special component in country’s economy, the chief guest said fish fries are disapperaing in the Sundarbans and it’s adjacent rivers due for netting with poision.
He said developing the fisheries resources, which have immense potential, can significantly strengthen the country’s economic base and make the nation self-reliant.
The country’s income from exporting fish has increased a lot during the last decade, he added.
The fisheries week is held every year to create awareness among the people about the country’s fish resources.
In order to protect the endangered species of fish, the government has been running various reservations in different rivers and water-bodies across the country to ensure that the species can breed.
Earlier, KCC Mayor released fish fries in city’s Shaheed Hadis Park’s pond follwing a colourful rally brought out from the Park and ended at the collectorate building. Fish farmers association, fishermen association, frozen foods association and peoples of all walks of life attended the function.
