Tk 961.65 cr project for
rain water conservation

Staff Correspondent: The government has approved a project to provide safe water to the locals by conserving rain water in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. The cost of the top project ‘Supply of rain water through conservation of rain water in coastal districts’ has been estimated at Tk 961.65 crore. The government will bear the entire cost.
The project was recently approved at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council.
According to Planning Minister MA Mannan, the project will be implemented by the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) at the initiative of the Local Government Department of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. Its implementation period is from October 2021 to June 2024. He added that the project will be implemented in 44 upazilas of 10 coastal districts. The coverage of safe water supply in the project areas will be increased to 60.1 percent by 2030.
The main activities of the project are: (a) Construction of 2 lakh 7 thousand 72 rain water conservation units and (b) Construction of catchment area of 20 thousand 6 rain water conservation systems.
The project is included in the list of unapproved new projects in the 2021-22 FY RADP.
