Gulistan underground market declared risky
Staff Correspondent: Gulistan underground market in the capital has been declared risky to fire incidents.
Fire service and civil defense department made the announcement after visiting the market place yesterday.
Fire Service’s Dhaka District Zone-1 Deputy Assistant Director Md Bazlur Rashid said there is no source of water in Gulistan underground market. There is no way to get water there in case of fire. Even, there is no fire alarm system (detector). There are some fire extinguishers in the market but all of them are expired and ineffective. The ventilation system is found completely ineffective. The stairs of the market are small and narrow.
Not only that, the fire service had submitted a similar report after visiting the market two years ago. But even after submitting that report, no action was taken, he said.
In the last one-month, we have visited so many multi-storied buildings including markets in Dhaka Zone-1 area. We found all of them risky. Nine of them were found highly flammable, the official added.
